History & Heritage: Courlay’s roots stretch back to Gallo-Roman times, with its name likely derived from the Latin curtis (court or farm). Once part of the Poitou region, it played a role in the Vendée Wars (1793–1796) and, during World War II, served as a hideout for Resistance fighters sabotaging German supply lines. Nearby, the partially restored Château de la Pastellière hosts events and adds a touch of medieval allure.
